When I asked my campaign to adopt the slogan, “Focused on You,” it meant more to me than something that was simply “catchy.” I recalled growing up in central Illinois farm country, where I spent my youth working with a local farmer. It was there and then I realized all of my labor would be spent meeting the demands of people I would likely never meet. But I believed in the work ethic, the farmer, and the community he served. I grew up believing service to others, if based upon solid and well-executed principles, would allow many to reap what was carefully sown – delivering a better present and future.
Since then, the principles I embraced as a young Jim Gunning haven’t changed. In my nearly 20 years as a military pilot, I continued a commitment to my responsibilities while learning many sobering lessons during Desert Storm, in Mogadishu, and other global danger zones. Though far from home, I believed our mission was to serve and protect the interests and individuals of many whom myself and my fellow crewmates would never meet. And even today, as a commercial airline pilot in a post-9/11 world, like you, I have witnessed the changes to our daily lives marked by heightened security and the heightened anxiety of our travelers.
To me, securing our freedoms and advancing the benefits of a stable world is something I’d like to focus upon for you.
I’ve prided myself as a professional, and as a father, on having a 360-degree view of our world – whether local or global. When I accepted the role of lead negotiator during bankruptcy proceedings of a major airline, I became a student of the varying perspectives, and helped bring people to the table, and together in agreement. And while mayor of Lone Tree, year-after-year, I advanced the interests of our direct and surrounding communities by effectively weaving business and government together to produce positive outcomes.
My wife Amy is my rock, and I have been married for over 30 years. Together, we have been blessed to call Colorado our home, where we have raised our children against the backdrop of the most beautiful state in our country. My call is to make our home a better place, adapt and create opportunity for the future of our District, and continue to serve a community – yes – many of whom I may never have the chance to meet. But I’m sure I’m going to try.
I have a proven track record of bringing solutions and leadership to difficult situations, but I know success begins with building our trust through open communication, and a commitment to truly listening. I won’t be a politician who merely waits for his turn to talk.
In staying Focused on You, I’m going to ask that you check back often as we update positions, schedule events, and present our ideas on how to promote the interests of our families, limit government, and preserve our way of life in Colorado for generations to come.
My name is Jim Gunning, and I am asking for the opportunity to earn your vote in the 2018 Republican primary for U.S. Congress in the 4th Congressional District.
